# Planning Site Rotation for a Mobile Potato Cleaner

## Key takeaways

- Assess the movement route separately from the working footprint.
- Match connection heights, gaps and alignment at every receiving position.
- Record each position's setup so relocation becomes repeatable.
- Accept each location with comparable crop samples and measured feed.

## Define what changes between receiving positions

A mobile cleaner is useful when receiving activity shifts between locations, but every move changes the relationship between the incoming crop, the cleaning stage and the next transfer. A position can provide enough room for the machine while leaving an awkward approach for bulk deliveries or ton bags. The planning problem is therefore to create repeatable receiving positions, each with a defined feed direction, discharge destination and access route.

We start by drawing each intended position on the same site plan and recording what actually changes: floor level, incoming delivery method, downstream connection and available electrical supply. The [Mobile potato cleaning machine](https://www.spudmate.com/products/potato-cleaning-machine-mobile/) is specified for field intake, bulk and ton-bag receiving, and soil removal. Treat those applications as the starting point for a site assessment; they do not establish how a particular delivery arrangement will perform.

## Understand the cleaning stage before planning the move

The cleaner uses a 500 mm effective belt and rubber cleaning rollers. Its soil-removal role depends on presenting crop consistently to the cleaning section rather than delivering intermittent heaps. Uneven feeding can change how material occupies the working surface and how it reaches the discharge. During a trial, observe crop distribution, soil carried forward and accumulation together, because a clear discharge alone does not show whether the cleaning result meets the receiving requirement.

The stated capacity is approximately 15 t/h. Use that figure for preliminary flow planning, then establish an operating target with representative potatoes and soil conditions. The hopper is about 3 m³, but volume alone cannot establish a permitted crop load or a buffering duration. Those depend on loading conditions and material properties. For the wider intake arrangement, see our [modular dry-cleaning line layout guide](https://www.spudmate.com/dry-cleaning-potato-lines-modular-layout/) for context on how individual stages relate to the overall flow.

## Check the travel route separately from the working footprint

The stated machine dimensions are 4200 × 1950 × 1450 mm. This envelope helps screen doorways and receiving bays, but it does not define the space needed to turn, approach a connection or operate the tow bar. Plot the full movement route, including corners and the final approach. Measure fixed obstructions and identify floor joints, gradients, loose ground and drainage features that could interrupt movement or make the final position inconsistent.

Check the actual wheel path and towing arrangement against the supplied machine before approving a route. No turning radius, ground clearance, towing limit or transport capacity is supplied here, so do not derive those values from the overall dimensions. A route rehearsal should follow the applicable movement instructions and agreed site procedure. Record the approach direction and destination reference points so later moves reproduce the same alignment instead of relying on a visual estimate.

- Measure the narrowest passage and the space available at each turn.
- Inspect the actual wheel path across joints, gradients and changes in surface.
- Mark final position references outside the travel path.
- Review the towing arrangement and movement instructions before the route rehearsal.

## Choose the connection by transfer geometry

The cleaner has an adjustable overall height of 1450-1750 mm, an inlet height of 830-1300 mm and an outlet height of 750-1050 mm. These are distinct dimensions. Overall height describes the machine envelope; inlet and outlet heights describe connection points. Measure the receiving surface at the proposed discharge location, then assess the vertical step, horizontal gap and alignment across the crop stream. Do not assume that every stated height can be selected independently.

The [Potato Conveyor BSSJ8-08](https://www.spudmate.com/products/potato-conveyor-bssj8-08/) has a stated inlet height of 800 mm and outlet height of 490-890 mm, with adjustable height and speed. Its inlet falls numerically within the cleaner’s outlet range, which makes the pairing worth evaluating. That overlap does not prove a workable transfer: structure, adjustment relationships and discharge trajectory still matter. Likewise, the conveyor’s 800 mm belt width and the cleaner’s 500 mm effective belt describe different working widths, not a guaranteed transfer fit.

| Planning factor | Mobile cleaning machine | BSSJ8-08 | Meaning for the layout |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Capacity | Approximately 15 t/h | Approximately 80 t/h | The higher conveyor rating does not increase the cleaner rating. |
| Dimensions and working width | 4200 × 1950 × 1450 mm; 500 mm effective belt | 8050 × 1300 × 1300 mm; belt width 800 mm | Use the envelopes for preliminary placement; evaluate the transfer across the different working widths. |
| Connection heights | Adjustable height 1450-1750 mm; inlet height 830-1300 mm; outlet height 750-1050 mm | Inlet height 800 mm; outlet height 490-890 mm; height can be adjusted | The stated cleaner outlet range includes the conveyor inlet height; physical compatibility still requires assessment. |
| Electrical specifications | 1.75 kW; 220 V | 2.2 kW; AC380V/50Hz | Plan electrical connections for each selected machine at every receiving position. |
| Relevant construction | Rubber cleaning rollers; tow bar; hopper about 3 m³ | Electric drive roller; squirrel-cage passive roller; detachable feeding baffle; rubber side protection; finger-shaped buffer; speed can be adjusted | Review movement, receiving and transfer arrangements around the stated components. |

## Reserve service access and plan electrical reconnection

Select the working orientation only after identifying the actual service access points, controls and routes used to remove collected material. A bay that accepts the machine lengthwise may place an access point against a wall. Keep the required working area available throughout receiving, including when delivery vehicles or crop containers occupy nearby space. These are layout requirements to establish for the project; the supplied records do not define a service-side clearance or access envelope.

The cleaner is specified at 1.75 kW and 220 V; the transfer conveyor is specified at 2.2 kW and AC380V/50Hz. Each receiving position therefore needs an electrical connection plan appropriate to the selected equipment. Identify connection locations and cable routing without placing leads across the movement path. Include isolation and reconnection in the relocation procedure prepared for the site. Our [potato handling line solutions](https://www.spudmate.com/#solutions) provide context for arranging receiving and transfer stages around these constraints.

## Make repositioning a recorded changeover

Give each approved receiving position its own setup record. Include approach direction, floor reference points, selected connection heights, discharge destination and the electrical connection location. Also record how the machine is secured for operation under its applicable instructions. A tow bar establishes a means of towing connection; it does not establish a road transport capability or a parking restraint. Define movement and positioning arrangements for the actual unit before making rotation part of routine receiving.

After a move, inspect the connections before introducing potatoes. Look for a changed transfer gap, shifted alignment, obstructed access and cable interference. Check the machine using the prescribed startup procedure, then introduce a limited feed and observe the hand-off. If crop collects at one edge or falls outside the receiving surface, correct the geometry before increasing flow. For broader cleaning and inspection layout context, see our [potato line cleaning, lifting and inspection guide](https://www.spudmate.com/water-wash-potato-line-cleaning-lifting-inspection/).

1. Assess receiving position
2. Check movement route
3. Align crop transfers
4. Trial and record setup

Conceptual workflow for approving each receiving position; it does not represent machine layout or scale.

## Accept each position with a comparable crop trial

Agree the acceptance method before the trial. Record crop size range, incoming soil condition, receiving method and the intended operating rate. Measure feed over a stated period and collect comparable samples before and after cleaning. Define how residual soil and visible crop damage will be assessed, including sample size and collection points. Observe the transfer continuously during the measured run so a satisfactory sample does not conceal recurring surges, spill or accumulation elsewhere in the receiving arrangement.

Repeat the trial at each intended position using comparable crop and feeding conditions. Record selected heights, alignment and conveyor speed settings alongside the results. Acceptance should cover cleaning outcome, transfer continuity and access during operation, using limits agreed for the project. Compare crop samples consistently and state any delay between handling and inspection. A successful trial with one lot supports that tested condition; it does not establish performance for every soil load, crop size or delivery pattern.

| Observation | Compare first | Controlled check | Acceptance record |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Crop collects at the transfer | Feed pattern, downstream setting and transfer geometry | Use a limited, consistent feed while checking the receiving surface and alignment. | Measured feed rate, settings and whether accumulation grows during the run. |
| Spill begins after relocation | Discharge alignment and horizontal gap | Compare the new position with its recorded reference points. | Final alignment and observed spill during the agreed trial period. |
| More soil remains on the crop | Incoming soil condition and presentation to the cleaning section | Compare incoming and outgoing samples under a stated feed condition. | Sample method, crop condition and residual-soil assessment. |
| One position gives poorer crop condition | Transfer step, gap and feed surges | Inspect comparable samples using the same timing and assessment method. | Observed damage, inspection timing and the setup used. |
| Routine access becomes obstructed | Machine orientation and delivery activity | Rehearse access with the receiving area arranged as it will be during operation. | Available access routes and the approved working position. |

## Separate location problems from crop and feed changes

If performance changes after relocation, first compare the setup records. A different floor level can alter the effective transfer relationship even when the height setting appears unchanged. A new delivery approach can also produce a different feed pattern. Hold crop condition and feed rate as consistent as practical while checking alignment, gap and receiving surface height. This makes the investigation more useful than adjusting several variables at once and losing track of which change helped.

Keep separate observations for cleaning and transfer. Increased soil carryover with a stable hand-off calls for a review of incoming material and presentation to the cleaning section. Spill or a growing pile at the connection calls for a review of geometry and downstream operation. The transfer conveyor’s approximately 80 t/h capacity does not raise the cleaner’s approximately 15 t/h rating. Treat any combined operating target as project-specific and verify it at the receiving positions that will actually be used.
